Beginner guide to Quran & Quranic Sciences

Reading time: 10 min

Test your Quranic knowledge with interactive quizzes — surahs, memorization, tajwid and sciences at your own pace.

What you need to understand

Learning the Quran is not only memorising surahs: it means knowing how the Book is organised, understanding what you recite, and linking recitation, meaning and practice. This guide gives beginners a clear path, then Qalima practice mode helps you check your progress.

How the Quran is structured

The Quran has 114 surahs and more than 6,000 verses (ayat). In the mushaf, surahs are generally arranged from longest to shortest, with Al-Fatiha at the opening — not strictly in chronological order.

Start with short surahs used in prayer (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, Al-Kafirun…), then expand gradually. The 30 juz parts are useful if you follow a monthly reading rhythm.

Makkah and Madinah: why context matters

Makkan surahs often emphasise faith, the Hereafter, Allah's oneness and moral reminders. Madinan surahs address community life, rules and the early Muslim polity.

Knowing this distinction helps when you read tafsir or when a quiz question asks about the general context of a teaching.

A revision method that lasts

Choose short, regular sessions (10–15 minutes) rather than rare long ones. After each quiz round, reread the explanations — that is where understanding is built.

On Qalima, Quran practice mode turns revision into active learning with sourced corrections.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Memorising surah names without knowing their themes or place in the mushaf.
  • Mixing up tajwid, tafsir, memorisation and Quranic sciences.
  • Chasing a high score without rereading corrections.
  • Trying to memorise everything before reading short surahs correctly.

Practical tips

  • Start with 5 questions per session, then increase when explanations feel familiar.
  • Link each short surah to one main theme (mercy, tawhid, protection…).
  • Use Quran practice mode after reading to fix key points.
  • Try a family multiplayer round on the Quran theme to vary revision.
