Forgive to be forgiven

This verse invites us to be generous and forgiving, even after an offense.

وَلۡيَعۡفُواْ وَلۡيَصۡفَحُوٓاْۗ أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۚ

Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you?

Quran, An-Nur 24:22

The verse asks people of means not to swear that they will stop supporting relatives, the poor, and those who emigrated in the way of Allah. It then asks them to pardon and overlook, reminding them that they themselves wish to receive Allah's forgiveness.

In an ordinary disagreement, forgiveness can begin by giving up a resentful remark or the desire to answer harm with harm. The verse does not ask us to deny what happened; this Qalima synthesis keeps to its explicit invitation to pardon and overlook.

Today, think of a minor disagreement and let go of one resentful remark you might otherwise repeat.
