بِرّ
This verse questions our consistency between what we say and what we do.
أَتَأۡمُرُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَتَنسَوۡنَ أَنفُسَكُمۡ وَأَنتُمۡ تَتۡلُونَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ
Do you enjoin righteousness (al-birr) upon people while you forget yourselves, while you recite the Scripture? Do you not reason?

The verse addresses those who enjoin good upon others but neglect to practice it themselves. It highlights the importance of sincerity: our actions must match our words. The term 'birr' here means goodness, piety, and every virtuous deed. In our daily lives, we often advise others to be patient, generous, or prayerful, while forgetting to apply these advices ourselves. This verse invites us to look at ourselves first and to embody what we recommend.
