قَسْوَة
This verse describes how hearts can become hard like stone.
ثُمَّ قَسَتۡ قُلُوبُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَهِيَ كَٱلۡحِجَارَةِ أَوۡ أَشَدُّ قَسۡوَةٗۚ
Then, after that, your hearts became hardened: they are like stones, or even harder.
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:74
The verse addresses the Children of Israel after they witnessed clear signs. Their hearts became hard, like stones or even harder. Yet some stones gush with rivers, others split to let water out, and some fall down in humility before Allah. The hard heart, however, produces none of these. This observation invites each of us to examine our own hearts. Are we receptive to reminders and signs from Allah, or do we remain unmoved? The verse encourages us to keep a soft heart, one that is moved and turns to Him.
