بِرّ
This verse redefines righteousness by linking it to faith and actions.
لَّيۡسَ ٱلۡبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّواْ وُجُوهَكُمۡ قِبَلَ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱلۡبِرَّ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأٓخِرِ
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah and the Last Day.
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:177
The verse begins by dismissing an idea: righteousness is not limited to facing east or west. It then associates true righteousness with faith in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, as well as with concrete actions: giving wealth, praying, paying zakah, keeping promises, and being patient. Today, we can ask ourselves whether our practice goes beyond outward gestures. Righteousness shows in our relationship with Allah and in how we treat others, especially in difficult times.
Today, perform an act of generosity toward a relative or someone in need, even a simple gesture of sharing.
