صِيَام
This verse teaches us that fasting is prescribed to help us become righteous.
كُتِبَ عَلَيۡكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَتَّقُونَ
Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain righteousness.
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:183
In this verse, Allah addresses the believers and announces that fasting is an obligation. He specifies that this practice was already prescribed to previous communities. The goal is clear: to attain righteousness, that is, a vigilant consciousness of Allah. Today, we can apply this teaching by remembering that every act of self-control, like fasting, brings us closer to righteousness. It helps us be more aware of our actions and cultivate patience.
Today, if you are not fasting, choose an act of self-control (like avoiding an excess) and do it while thinking of Allah.
