إِنۡفَاق
This verse answers a question about spending and guides our generosity.
يَسۡـَٔلُونَكَ مَاذَا يُنفِقُونَۖ قُلۡ مَآ أَنفَقۡتُم مِّنۡ خَيۡرٖ فَلِلۡوَٰلِدَيۡنِ وَٱلۡأَقۡرَبِينَ وَٱلۡيَتَٰمَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَٰكِينِ وَٱبۡنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِۗ وَمَا تَفۡعَلُواْ مِنۡ خَيۡرٖ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِهِۦ عَلِيمٞ
“They ask you, [O Muhammad], what they should spend. Say, ‘Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.’”
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:215
The verse shows where to direct our spending: first parents, then relatives, orphans, the needy, and travelers. It does not specify an amount, but it associates these people with any good expenditure. Allah knows every good we do, even the most discreet. In our daily lives, we can broaden our generosity beyond ourselves. Thinking of our parents, a family member, a neighbor in need, or a passerby makes our spending more meaningful.
Today, choose one person from these categories and give them a donation, even a small one, or offer them a material service.
