A Fair Provision

This verse establishes a clear right for divorced women.

وَلِلۡمُطَلَّقَٰتِ مَتَٰعُۢ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۖ حَقًّا عَلَى ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ

And for divorced women is a provision according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous.

Quran, Al-Baqara 2:241

The verse states that divorced women are entitled to a material provision, called 'mata', according to what is acceptable (al-ma'ruf). This obligation is presented as a duty for those who are righteous. The previous verse mentions widows, and this one extends the principle of kindness to divorced women.
