المَعْرُوف
This verse establishes a clear right for divorced women.
وَلِلۡمُطَلَّقَٰتِ مَتَٰعُۢ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۖ حَقًّا عَلَى ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ
And for divorced women is a provision according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous.
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:241
The verse states that divorced women are entitled to a material provision, called 'mata', according to what is acceptable (al-ma'ruf). This obligation is presented as a duty for those who are righteous. The previous verse mentions widows, and this one extends the principle of kindness to divorced women. In our daily lives, this reminds us to treat others with fairness and generosity, especially during separations. Acting with what is acceptable means respecting the dignity of others and honoring their rights, even when the relationship ends.
Today, if you know a divorced person, offer concrete help, like a meal or a service, as a sign of respect and support.
