رِيَاء
This verse warns us against what can nullify the value of our charity.
Do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people.
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:264
The verse compares the one who gives to be seen to a smooth rock covered with dust: a downpour washes away the dust and leaves it bare. Thus, showing off and hurtful reminders erase the good of charity. In our daily lives, we may sometimes seek recognition or remind others of our gifts. This verse invites us to purify our intention and preserve the dignity of the receiver.
Today, before giving or helping, take a moment to check your intention: act only for Allah, without expecting anything in return.
