تَعَفُّف
This verse teaches us to recognize the needy who hide their need out of dignity.
يَحۡسَبُهُمُ ٱلۡجَاهِلُ أَغۡنِيَآءَ مِنَ ٱلتَّعَفُّفِ
The ignorant think them rich because of their restraint (ta'affuf).
Quran, Al-Baqara 2:273
The verse describes needy people who have devoted themselves to Allah's cause and cannot travel to earn a living. Their dignity is such that an ignorant person thinks they are rich. They are known by their appearance, and they do not beg insistently. In our lives, we may meet people who are discreet about their needs. This verse invites us to be attentive to these signs and to give without drawing attention, for Allah knows all that we spend.
Today, give discreetly to someone in need, without making them feel humiliated.
