حَنِيف
This verse invites us to follow the example of Abraham, a man entirely submitted to Allah.
مَا كَانَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمُ يَهُودِيّٗا وَلَا نَصۡرَانِيّٗا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفٗا مُّسۡلِمٗا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ
Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a hanif, one submitting to Allah, and he was not of the polytheists.
Quran, Al-Imran 3:67
The verse corrects a misconception: Abraham did not belong to the Jewish or Christian community. He was a hanif, meaning someone who turns exclusively to Allah with sincerity and uprightness. He was a Muslim, submitted to Allah, and he did not associate anything with Him. Today, we can ask ourselves: towards what does my heart turn? Following Abraham's way means choosing Allah as our sole guide in our decisions, words, and actions.
