إِخْلَاص
This verse warns us against excessive joy and the desire to be praised for what we have not done.
لَا تَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَفۡرَحُونَ بِمَآ أَتَواْ وَّيُحِبُّونَ أَن يُحۡمَدُواْ بِمَا لَمۡ يَفۡعَلُواْ
And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do...
Quran, Al-Imran 3:188
The verse mentions two blameworthy attitudes: rejoicing in one's deeds and loving to be praised for what one has not done. It associates these behaviors with a painful punishment, without specifying a cause. The immediate context speaks of the covenant of the People of the Book to not conceal the truth, but they broke it. In our daily lives, we may be tempted to seek recognition or exaggerate our merits. This verse invites us to humility: acknowledge our actions without boasting, and do not claim what we have not done.
Today, do a good deed without telling anyone, and refuse any compliment for something you did not do.
