Reform and Leave in Peace

This verse shows how Allah opens the door to repentance and reconciliation.

فَإِن تَابَا وَأَصۡلَحَا فَأَعۡرِضُواْ عَنۡهُمَآۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ تَوَّابٗا رَّحِيمًا

But if they repent and correct themselves, leave them alone. Indeed, Allah is ever Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

Quran, An-Nisa 4:16

In this verse, Allah instructs to deal firmly with those who commit a grave act, but He immediately clarifies: if they sincerely repent and reform, we must stop tormenting them. The verse brings together repentance, reform, and peace. It also associates two of Allah's attributes: He is the Accepter of repentance and the Merciful.

For us, this means that repentance is not just words: it must be followed by concrete improvement. And when someone repents and changes, we must respect that fresh start and not constantly remind them of past mistakes.

Today, if you have made a mistake, repent sincerely and do a good deed to make amends. If someone has repented, leave them in peace and do not bring up their past.
