مَعْرُوف
This verse invites believers to treat their wives with kindness.
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِۚ
And live with them in kindness.
Quran, An-Nisa 4:19
In this verse, Allah forbids inheriting women against their will and constraining them. He commands to live with them according to maʿrūf, meaning what is recognized as good and proper. This includes gentleness, respect, and fairness in daily life. Even if one feels aversion towards his wife, the verse reminds that Allah may place much good in a situation one dislikes. Thus, kindness does not depend on feelings but on a voluntary decision.
Today, perform a concrete act of kindness towards your wife, such as a gentle word or helping with a task, seeking to apply maʿrūf.
