رِيَاء
This verse warns us against showing off in our spending.
يُنفِقُونَ أَمۡوَٰلَهُمۡ رِئَآءَ ٱلنَّاسِ
Those who spend their wealth to be seen by the people
Quran, An-Nisa 4:38
The verse associates ostentatious spending with lack of faith in Allah and the Last Day. It shows that the intention behind the action is essential: seeking to be seen by people corrupts the value of the deed. In our daily lives, we may sometimes do good to be noticed or appreciated. This verse invites us to purify our intention and act for Allah alone, even if no one sees it.
Today, perform a good deed in secret, such as helping someone or making a discreet donation, with the sole intention of pleasing Allah.
