كَفُّ النَّفْس
In a conflict, the believer chooses not to retaliate with violence.
مَآ أَنَا۠ بِبَاسِطٖ يَدِيَ إِلَيۡكَ لِأَقۡتُلَكَۖ إِنِّيٓ أَخَافُ ٱللَّهَ رَبَّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
I shall not raise my hand against you to kill you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Quran, Al-Ma'ida 5:28
This verse recounts the response of Adam's son to his brother who threatens to kill him. He refuses to return evil for evil. His restraint is not weakness but an act of piety: he fears Allah, Lord of the worlds. In our lives, we may be provoked or verbally attacked. Withholding our hand, tongue, or anger out of fear of Allah is strength. It prevents us from entering a cycle of violence.
Today, if someone provokes you, respond with a kind word or remain silent, keeping in mind that you fear Allah.
