Truth over habit

This verse invites us to prefer revelation over blind traditions.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ قَالُواْ حَسۡبُنَا مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَآۚ أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَآؤُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا يَهۡتَدُونَ

And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our fathers." Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided?

Quran, Al-Ma'ida 5:104

The verse describes people who refuse the call to follow revelation by claiming to follow their ancestors. Yet, the verse points out that those ancestors knew nothing and were not guided. It teaches us not to follow blindly, but to seek the truth.

In our lives, we often inherit customs or ideas without questioning them. This verse encourages us to examine them in the light of the Quran and reason, and to choose what is right, even if it differs from habits.

Today, pick one habit or opinion you inherited without thinking, and check whether it aligns with what Allah has revealed.
