Calling upon Him with humility and privacy

This verse teaches us how to call upon our Lord.

ٱدۡعُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ تَضَرُّعٗا وَخُفۡيَةًۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدِينَ

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.

Quran, Al-A'raf 7:55

Allah asks us here to call upon Him with humility and discretion. The word 'taḍarruʿ' evokes a sincere supplication, marked by need and respect. Discretion, 'khufya', suggests an inner invocation, far from ostentation. The verse associates these two attitudes with supplication.

The verse states that Allah does not like transgressors. In this context, transgression may mean exceeding limits in supplication, but the text does not define these limits precisely. So we stick to what is said: humility and discretion are valued.
