سمع
This verse warns us against a superficial kind of listening.
وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَٱلَّذِينَ قَالُواْ سَمِعۡنَا وَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ
And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
Quran, Al-Anfal 8:21
The verse brings together two attitudes: saying "we have heard" and not truly listening. It calls us to sincere listening, which touches the heart and leads to action. The previous verse asks us to obey Allah and His Messenger, and the next one compares those who do not listen to deaf and dumb creatures who do not reason. Today, we hear many words, but do we let them truly guide us? Sincere listening means letting the message penetrate us and change our behavior.
Before replying "yes, I heard" to a recommendation, take a minute to ask yourself how you will put it into practice today.
