When a promise binds

This verse invites us to reflect on the weight of our commitments to Allah.

وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ عَٰهَدَ ٱللَّهَ لَئِنۡ ءَاتَىٰنَا مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah: "If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity and be among the righteous."

Quran, At-Tawba 9:75

The verse mentions people who commit to Allah: if they receive a favor, they promise to give in charity and act righteously. This commitment is called a 'ahd. The following verse shows they did not keep their word: they became stingy and turned away.

In our lives, we sometimes make promises to Allah, for instance when asking for help. This verse reminds us of the importance of keeping those commitments. A sincere promise translates into concrete actions, like sharing what we have received.

Today, do a small act of generosity: give charity or help someone, mindful of the promise you make to Allah.
