صَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ
Facing hardship, Joseph's father chooses a beautiful patience and seeks help from Allah.
فَصَبۡرٞ جَمِيلٞۖ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلۡمُسۡتَعَانُ
So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help.
Quran, Yusuf 12:18
In this verse, Jacob learns that his son Joseph has been devoured by a wolf. He does not rebel. He says: "A beautiful patience!" He combines this patience with seeking help from Allah. The verse thus brings together two attitudes: being patient and turning to Allah. In life, we may face difficult news or injustices. This verse invites us to adopt a dignified attitude: not to panic, but to keep hope and entrust our situation to Allah.
Today, if a difficulty arises, say inwardly: "A beautiful patience, and it is Allah I call for help."
