قَنَاعَة
This verse invites us to detach from fleeting worldly goods and turn to the believers with gentleness.
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيۡنَيۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزۡوَٰجٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَٱخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَكَ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to certain of them, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers.
Quran, Al-Hijr 15:88
Allah asks us not to look with envy at the temporary enjoyments given to some. He consoles by saying not to grieve for them. The verse associates this detachment with a humble attitude toward the believers: 'lower your wing', an image of gentleness and modesty. In daily life, this qanāʿa (contentment) helps us appreciate what we have and avoid comparison. It invites us to be humble and kind to those around us, without trying to imitate those who possess more.
Today, when you feel envy, take a breath and recall this verse. Then, perform an act of humility toward a believer, such as helping them or speaking to them gently.
