قَوْلٌ مَيْسُورٌ
This verse teaches us to speak kindly when we are unable to fulfill a request.
فَقُل لَّهُمۡ قَوۡلٗا مَّيۡسُورٗا
then speak to them a gentle word
Quran, Al-Isra 17:28
In this verse, Allah teaches the Prophet ﷺ how to behave with those who ask for help. If he must turn away from them because he is awaiting mercy from his Lord, he should say a gentle and kind word. The previous verse warns against wastefulness, and the next against stinginess. Here, the focus is on how to refuse with kindness. In our daily lives, we cannot always help everyone. Sometimes we have to say no. This verse reminds us that even a refusal can be gentle. A kind word preserves the dignity of the other and maintains a respectful relationship.
Today, if someone asks you for something you cannot do, respond with a gentle and kind word.
