The Commitment Will Be Questioned

This verse reminds us that every commitment will be questioned.

وَأَوۡفُواْ بِٱلۡعَهۡدِۖ إِنَّ ٱلۡعَهۡدَ كَانَ مَسۡـُٔولٗا

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

Quran, Al-Isra 17:34

In this verse, Allah commands to fulfill commitments. He specifies that the commitment will be questioned. This means we must keep our promises, contracts, and words. The previous verse talks about protecting the orphan's property, and the next about just measure and weight. These instructions form a whole about justice and responsibility.

In our daily lives, we make many commitments: to Allah, to others, and to ourselves. Keeping one's word builds trust. Breaking it can harm others and our own conscience. This verse invites us to be serious about our promises, even the smallest ones.

Today, fulfill a promise you had postponed, even a small one.
