جَدَل
This verse invites us to become aware of our tendency to argue.
وَكَانَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَكۡثَرَ شَيۡءٖ جَدَلٗا
But man has ever been, most of anything, prone to dispute.
Quran, Al-Kahf 18:54
In this verse, Allah reminds that He has diversified examples in the Qur'an to guide people. Then He notes that man is nevertheless the greatest disputer. The following verse shows that some, despite guidance, prefer to await punishment rather than believe. This observation calls us to humility. When reading the Qur'an, we may be tempted to argue endlessly instead of reflecting. Today, let us choose to receive the examples with an open heart.
Before reacting to a verse, take a minute to ask yourself: am I seeking to understand or to contradict?
