This verse invites us to contemplate the universal prostration before Allah.
أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَسۡجُدُۤ لَهُۥۤ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَن فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ وَٱلنُّجُومُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ وَٱلدَّوَآبُّ وَكَثِيرٞ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ
Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people?
Quran, Al-Hajj 22:18
The verse brings together very different realities: beings in the heavens and on earth, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and the animals. All prostrate before Allah, each in its own way. Many humans do so too, but others refuse and deserve punishment. Our prostration in prayer connects us to this cosmic order. It is an act of humility and gratitude: we freely choose to submit to the One who governs everything.
Today, perform a prostration with full awareness, meditating on the fact that all creation prostrates with you.
