خُشُوعٌ
This verse describes an essential quality of the believers: humility in prayer.
ٱلَّذِينَ هُمۡ فِي صَلَاتِهِمۡ خَٰشِعُونَ
those who are humble in their prayer
Quran, Al-Muminoon 23:2
In this passage, Allah associates the success of the believers with their humility during prayer. The word khushūʿ evokes sincere concentration, a present heart, and a calm body. This quality is presented as a distinguishing sign of the believers, along with turning away from vain talk mentioned right after. In our daily lives, prayer can become a quick routine. Yet this verse invites us to slow down, to be aware of every movement and every word. Humility is not decreed; it is cultivated by remembering that we stand before Allah.
Today, before each prayer, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are standing before Allah. During the prayer, focus on the meaning of the words you recite.
