اسْتِئْنَاس
This verse teaches us an essential rule of courtesy to respect the privacy of others.
لَا تَدۡخُلُواْ بُيُوتًا غَيۡرَ بُيُوتِكُمۡ حَتَّىٰ تَسۡتَأۡنِسُواْ وَتُسَلِّمُواْ عَلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهَا
Do not enter houses other than your own until you ask permission and greet their inhabitants.
Quran, An-Nur 24:27
In this verse, Allah instructs believers not to enter a house that is not theirs without first asking permission and greeting its inhabitants. This practice, called istiʾnās, combines seeking authorization and greeting, showing respect for privacy and kindness towards others. In daily life, this means we should always knock or ring the bell before entering, and wait for a response. It also applies to messages: ask before sending something personal. This habit builds trust and mutual consideration.
Today, before entering a room or a house, knock and wait for a reply, then greet the person with a smile.
