غَفْلَة
This verse invites us to broaden our perspective beyond the immediate life.
يَعۡلَمُونَ ظَٰهِرٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ غَٰفِلُونَ
They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware.
Quran, Ar-Rum 30:7
Verse 30:7 describes a reality: many people only perceive the surface of this worldly life. They know its visible aspects, but they remain heedless of the Hereafter. The Arabic word 'ghafla' evokes this inattention, this forgetfulness of what is essential. In our daily lives, we can be absorbed by appearances: success, possessions, entertainment. Yet the verse invites us not to neglect the Hereafter. Taking a moment to reflect on our ultimate purpose helps us live with more meaning and coherence.
