صُحْبَة بِالْمَعْرُوف
This verse teaches how to balance faith and respect for parents.
وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَعۡرُوفٗا
“but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness”
Quran, Luqman 31:15
Verse 31:15 addresses a difficult situation: parents who push their child to associate partners with Allah. It commands not to obey them in this matter, but immediately asks to continue accompanying them in this world with appropriate kindness. Thus, refusing to obey does not mean breaking ties or being harsh. This statement combines two requirements: faithfulness to Allah and goodness towards parents. It calls for holding firm in one's faith while maintaining a kind and respectful attitude. It is a delicate balance, but possible with sincerity and gentleness.
Today, if a relative asks you to do something against your faith, refuse gently and offer a kind alternative.
