إِقَامَة الصَّلَاة
This verse, from Luqman's advice to his son, brings together four essential commitments.
أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱنۡهَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَۖ
Establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you.
Quran, Luqman 31:17
The verse associates prayer with three other attitudes: encouraging good, discouraging evil, and being patient in adversity. These actions require determination. The verse presents them as firm resolutions, not as options. In our daily lives, we can apply these principles by being constant in our prayer, supporting a just cause, expressing disagreement wisely, and remaining patient in difficulties.
Today, after each prayer, recall one good action to encourage and one thing to avoid, then accomplish the first with patience.
