تَقْدِير
This verse invites us to contemplate the precision with which Allah has determined the phases of the moon.
وَٱلۡقَمَرَ قَدَّرۡنَٰهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَٱلۡعُرۡجُونِ ٱلۡقَدِيمِ
And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.
Quran, Yaseen 36:39
In this verse, Allah reminds us that He has set precise stages for the moon. It goes through various shapes, from a thin crescent to a full disk, then wanes until it resembles a dried palm branch. This regularity is not a matter of chance, but a determination (taqdīr) from Allah. Observing the sky can help us become aware of this precision. Each night, the moon shows us a different aspect, always according to an established order. This can encourage us to trust in the divine order in our own lives, without fearing the unexpected.
Tonight, observe the moon and note its shape. Take a moment to reflect on the precision of its course, a sign of Allah's mastery.
