استماع
This verse invites us to listen carefully and follow what is best.
ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡتَمِعُونَ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ أَحۡسَنَهُۥٓۚ
who listen to speech and follow the best of it.
Quran, Az-Zumar 39:18
In this verse, Allah describes those who listen to speech and follow the best of it. He guides them and calls them people of understanding. The previous verse speaks of those who avoid false deities and turn back to Allah. The next one mentions those who deserve punishment. Thus, attentive listening and choosing good are linked to divine guidance. In our daily lives, we hear many words. We can choose to retain what is useful and kind, and leave aside what is harmful. This requires attention and discernment.
Today, before responding to someone, take a moment to listen fully, then choose a kind and constructive word.
