هَوَى
This verse invites us to reflect on the danger of blindly following our desires.
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire?
Quran, Al-Jaathiya 45:23
The verse describes a person who makes his desire an idol. He follows his whims without reflection. Allah then leads him astray knowingly and seals his heart and hearing, and places a veil over his vision. No one can guide him after that. In our daily lives, we may be tempted to follow our desires: overeating, procrastinating, or neglecting our prayers. This verse reminds us not to let our desires take control. We should think before acting and seek to please Allah.
Today, before doing an action, ask yourself: am I following my desire or am I seeking to please Allah?
