رَقِيب
This verse reminds us that every word is recorded.
مَّا يَلۡفِظُ مِن قَوۡلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيۡهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٞ
Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
Quran, Qaaf 50:18
In this verse, Allah informs us that an observer (raqib) is always present, ready to note each of our words. This verse follows the one mentioning two angels seated on the right and left, and precedes the mention of death. It invites us to be mindful of the value of our speech. In daily life, we often speak without thinking. Knowing that our words are observed can help us choose kind and useful words, and avoid hurtful or unnecessary ones.
Before speaking today, pause and ask yourself: is this word useful and kind?
