حَقّ
This verse describes a quality of Allah’s servants: they recognize a right of the needy in their wealth.
وَفِيٓ أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ حَقّٞ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ
And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived
Quran, Adh-Dhaariyat 51:19
Verse 51:19 is part of a description of believers who seek forgiveness at dawn (51:18). It mentions that they recognize in their wealth a right for the petitioner and the deprived. The word haqq evokes a due, a share to acknowledge, without specifying whether it is a legal obligation or a voluntary practice. This verse invites us to view our wealth as a trust that includes a share for others. Today, we can ask ourselves: who around us has a right on what we possess?
Identify today a person in need (petitioner, deprived) and give them a share of your wealth, even a modest one.
