تَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
This verse questions our attitude towards the Quran.
وَتَضۡحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبۡكُونَ
And you laugh and do not weep?
Quran, An-Najm 53:60
In this passage, Allah reproaches those who hear the Quran and laugh instead of being moved. The previous verse wonders at their astonishment, and the next describes them as distracted. The Quran is not entertainment: it calls for reflection and humility. Today, we may read the Quran lightly, without pausing on its message. This verse invites us to realize the greatness of this book and let our hearts be touched.
Before reading a page of the Quran today, ask yourself: 'Am I seeking to understand or to be entertained?' Then read one verse slowly, reflecting on its meaning.
