الْبِرّ
This verse guides us in our private conversations.
وَتَنَٰجَوۡاْ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ
and converse about righteousness and piety
Quran, Al-Mujadila 58:9
In this verse, Allah addresses the believers. He asks them not to use their private conversations to speak about sin, aggression, or disobedience. Instead, He invites them to converse about righteousness (al-birr) and piety (at-taqwa). The previous verse shows that some used these conversations for evil, but here Allah directs towards good. Practically, this means that our exchanges, even discreet ones, should reflect kindness. Before speaking, we can choose words that encourage, advise, or comfort, rather than criticize or harm.
Today, before a private conversation, ask yourself: do my words bring kindness? If not, rephrase them.
