Forgiving in the family

Today's verse invites us to be lenient with our loved ones.

وَإِن تَعۡفُواْ وَتَصۡفَحُواْ وَتَغۡفِرُواْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٌ

But if you pardon and overlook and forgive, then indeed Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Quran, At-Taghaabun 64:14

This verse addresses the believers. It acknowledges that some behaviors of our spouses and children can lead us astray. It warns us, but immediately opens a door: that of forgiveness. The verse associates three attitudes: excusing, overlooking faults, and forgiving.

In daily life, family tensions are common. This verse encourages us not to respond to mistakes with harshness. It invites us to imitate divine mercy, without promising a specific outcome. Simply, it reminds us that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Today, forgive a family member for a recent mistake, without bringing it up again.
