حَلَّاف
This verse warns us against a deceptive habit.
وَلَا تُطِعۡ كُلَّ حَلَّافٖ مَّهِينٍ
And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer
Quran, Al-Qalam 68:10
In this verse, Allah tells us not to obey someone who swears often and is contemptible. The word 'ḥallāf' refers to a person who multiplies oaths. The next verse adds that such a person is also a slanderer and a gossip. These flaws show their lack of moral worth. In daily life, some people speak with confidence and swear to convince. But their actions contradict their words. This verse invites us to observe behavior, not just oaths. We can thus avoid following bad advice.
Today, before following advice, observe whether the person is trustworthy by their actions, not by their oaths.
