خَوْض
This verse invites us to reflect on the impact of our words.
وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it].
Quran, Al-Muddaththir 74:45
In this passage, people describe their bad habits. They say they used to join those who engaged in vain discussions. The previous verse mentions they did not feed the poor, and the next one says they denied the Day of Recompense. Thus, indulging in futile talk is associated with other blameworthy behaviors. Today, we spend much time in worthless conversations, whether online or in person. Being aware of this helps us choose useful and kind words.
Today, before speaking, ask yourself: is this word useful or futile? If it is futile, choose to refrain.
