جَمْع الْمَال
This verse invites us to reflect on our relationship with money.
ٱلَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالٗا وَعَدَّدَهُۥ
Who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it
Quran, Al-Humaza 104:2
The verse describes a person who amasses wealth and counts it endlessly. It does not condemn possession itself, but the excessive attachment that occupies the whole heart. The next verse clarifies that this person thinks his wealth will make him immortal, an illusion that distances him from what truly matters. In our lives, checking our accounts is useful, but it can become a constant preoccupation. Remembering that true value is not in possessions helps us keep a light heart and focus on what really counts.
Today, take a moment to recite this verse and think of one thing you own that you could do without, then thank Allah for what you have.
