Repel evil with what is better

This verse teaches us to respond to evil with a better deed.

ٱدۡفَعۡ بِٱلَّتِي هِيَ أَحۡسَنُ

Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better.

Quran, Fussilat 41:34

The verse first states that the good deed and the bad deed are not equal. Then it invites us to repel evil with what is better. It is not about ignoring evil, but about responding to it with good. The following verse clarifies that this requires patience and a great share of goodness.

In daily life, this could mean answering a harsh word with a gentle one, or a hurtful gesture with a kind act. This attitude can turn a strained relationship into friendship.

Today, if someone says something unkind to you, respond with a kind word or a smile.
